Efficient Parenting – Lesson Plans Page 13 /170 General information As a parent of a child with disabilities, developing strategies for building positive relationships with various stakeholders is crucial for ensuring comprehensive support and care for your child. The goals of parenting are to provide a safe environment and also a secure/healthy attachment. Showing positive emotions and behaviors towards children have positive effects, gentle but firm style. Parental warmth and expression of positive emotions by the parent is important. Parenting characterized by involvement and vigilance, monitoring of outcomes, clear communication of expectations, proactive socialization, leads to a high level of children's behavioral self-regulation. LESSON OBJECTIVES The participant can/will... 1. Recognize the importance of a strong support system in fostering emotional well-being and how effective communication, empathy, and conflict resolution contribute to strengthening relationships. 2. Identify key people in their personal support system (family, friends, colleagues, healthcare professionals, educators, etc.) and reflect on how each person supports their well-being. 3. Practice effective communication techniques for interacting with children, healthcare professionals, educators, and support services, with an emphasis on clarity, empathy, and active listening. 4. Demonstrate assertiveness skills in advocating for their child’s needs within various systems (e.g., education, healthcare, social services). 5. Identify rights and resources available for children with disabilities and their families in their community, and understand how to access these services. 6. Develop strategies for conflict resolution and enhance interpersonal communication skills within relationships in their support system.
